Six questions worth asking any endodontist

These apply whichever practice you choose, including ours.

Is the endodontist a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics?
Board certification is voluntary and goes beyond the specialty degree. It requires written and oral examination plus case defence before the American Board of Endodontics. Ask directly, and check the AAE member directory.
Is a surgical operating microscope used on every case, or only on surgery?
Magnification changes what can be found: missed canals, hairline fractures, and the true extent of an infection. The useful question is not whether a practice owns a microscope but whether it is used on every case.
Is CBCT imaging available in the office on the day of the appointment?
Cone beam CT shows root anatomy in three dimensions where a conventional radiograph shows two. If it has to be referred out, diagnosis and treatment happen on different days.
How quickly can an urgent case be seen?
Pulpal pain and acute infection are time-sensitive. Ask what same-day or next-day availability actually looks like, not whether emergencies are accepted in principle.
How many specialists are in the practice?
A practice with more than one endodontist can usually absorb an urgent case without displacing a scheduled one, and can offer a genuine internal second opinion on a difficult tooth.
What comes back to the referring dentist, and how fast?
For a general dentist this is the whole relationship. Ask what the report contains, whether imaging is included, and when it arrives relative to the restorative appointment.

Common questions

Is Hope Endodontics affiliated with Desert Sun Endodontics?
No. Hope Endodontics and Desert Sun Endodontics are separate, independent practices. This page compares them using information each practice publishes about itself, so that patients and referring dentists can decide for themselves.
Do I need a referral to book with an endodontist?
No. You can book directly with Hope Endodontics. Many general dentists do refer for complex cases, and we coordinate with your dentist on the crown that follows treatment, but a referral is not required.
Can I get a second opinion on a root canal I have already been quoted for?
Yes, and it is a common reason people come to us. A second opinion visit includes a CBCT scan and a microscope examination, and produces a written account of what we find and the options, including the option of doing nothing yet.
What makes an endodontist different from a general dentist?
Endodontists treat endodontic cases exclusively, after two or more years of additional specialty training. They use a surgical operating microscope, CBCT imaging, and instruments for retreatment and microsurgery that a general practice does not typically hold.

Want a second opinion before you decide?

A second opinion visit includes CBCT imaging and a microscope examination, and ends with a written account of what we found and every option open to you.
